Tennessee Floods

Our Church Harpeth Presbyterian.
We happened to be driving by to pick up some supplies for our upcoming trip to Sarasota, FL. when Bev and I noticed the water was rising at the front of the church. The church sets beside the West Harpeth River (which actually looks more like a medium size creek than a river). We stopped to see if anyone was there and give them a heads up. This was after a significant amount of ran had already fallen. Other places around our community were already flooding. After warning some members we went on with our chores.

On our way back from running errands, the rain had picked up, so we stopped back by the church to check on the water. Our pastor, David Jones, was there with a few other members sandbagging around the church. Its looking scary because the river is about a foot from breaching the levee that runs beside our church. We stop to help but they have already done everything they could do. They had "borrowed" some hay barriers from the bridge construction in front of the church to divert the flow of water away from the front doors. It looked like the worst of the weather was gone and all we could do now was pray.

This is a view of the river. The church is to the far right and the skinny patch of grass thats in front of the church is the top of the levee. I took this picture as we left the church. The following pictures are from another member who was there after the water breeched the levee.

Needless to say the weather was not done with us. I think we had another 8 inches of rain after I left the church. This picture was taken from the side of our church and the bubbling water is the river breaching the levee.

Another view of the water coming over the levee.

Tons of water spilled over the levee and flooded our church and a lot of the area around it.
This is the parking lot.

The following pictures are what happened after the water got into the church....The water has receded now, and clean up has started.  I don't know how much damage was done, or how long it will take, but we will succeed in reclaiming our church.

The following pictures are from around our neighborhood.
Most of them are within walking distance from our house.
Thank God we live on a hill.

Grassland Elementary campus. The water got even with the road and went over at the bridge.

About 8 condos at the bottom of our hill. The river is in the drive.

This is behind our house. it used to be the Harpeth River Bridge at Moran Rd.

Water just started spilling over the bank. Beverly and I live on the hill behind this house,
about a quarter mile.
